chuck's many sides.

try as i might, i've never really been comfortable behind (or in front of) a camera. i often see something in my mind's eye and think it will somehow translate once i frame it in my viewfinder and 'click.' but sadly, the images rarely have the same impact as when i first witnessed them.

i've been trying to shoot chuck for years, and still don't think i have the image down pat. this morning i went out to give him my ritual morning kiss as he was enjoying his coffee and streaming 'this american life,' while thumbing through the new york times. i'm not a newspaper reader, but he routinely saves me sections that he thinks i might find amusing. i've always appreciated having an in house editor around, as it's saved me a lot of time and eye strain.

as i leaned down to kiss him, he looked up at me and his eyes looked a different color. a deeper, more saturated blue than i'd ever noticed before. so, i ran into my studio to grab my camera and hoped chuck wouldn't shy away, like he usually does when i ask to take his picture. he usually starts off with a pose like the one above, followed by equally goofy postures until i tell him to settle down. there's an 8 year old boy that refuses to leave chuck, which is a big part of why i love him so much, don't get me wrong. he helps me feel like i'm still 8 years old in many ways. but, it also frustrates me at times, because *i* know the man that lurks behind those silly grins and stuck out tongues.

which is why i really like the shot below....

that thar's a nice piccy.

I have the same problem - I somehow got out of art school without learning how to properly operate a real camera. I've tried a few times, but always felt too limited by the format - which I'm sure is 90% lack of understanding of how to take the picture I want to take, but still.

oh, i'm with ya....

i feel like certain mediums just come naturally to some people. no matter how much schoolin.' i think my issues with photography stem from my inability to submit to the moment, rather than the technical aspects. i either get frustrated or impatient with the subject, lighting, etc. or feel too self-conscious during the process. i just can't seem to get lost in it.

now, put a jar o'glue and junk in front of me and i'm good to go. :)

I envy you that you've found your 'thing'. I dabble everywhere, but I still haven't found the medium that just pulls me back, time and again.

well, just think of it as a journey....the process of finding that comfort zone or niche is just as important. keeping yourself open to lots of mediums will only help to foster your own unique voice. you might find a combination of mediums you never dreamed of before, or it may come to you in a dream, or in the way a cloud is forming in the sky.

in many ways the final product is just that, but only YOU can learn and grow from the process of making it.

chuck.....the great modest one.
he's worse than me, i tell ya!

and i looked closer at that pic later and realized the deeper blue is actually the reflection of our aqua colored pool in the background!!! isn't that funny? sooooo, guess i should start getting MY photo taken in mud bogs and chocolate factories now, huh?

You have???
i've been trying to shoot chuck for years

Me, too! But he absolutely refuses to sign that innocuous life insurance policy as long as I keep that .357 Magnum in plain sight... :o)
