goin' solo

baby smith
'heap no. 84' (fat of the land series)
mixed media and found objects on altered book cover
2006

so, i'm about at the halfway mark framing out my latest body of work for my solo show at chambers in portland, oregon this december. i've worked myself into a nice little rhythm...cutting, gluing, clamping, repeat....all the while, managing to churn out even more collages fit for the exhibit. i was encouraged to find out 2 of my pieces currently on view at the gallery sold last week. hopefully, it's a sign of good things to come. i really feel indebted to these people for believing in me. they're taking a chance on a non-local, and i need all the fairy dust i can get..plus a few ounces more.

Your work is getting more spare. It seems like you are cutting down to just the essential bones of them.
In the spaces, I have room to see the relationships between the figures and field.
I really admire what you're getting to here.
There is real purity that you're dealing in.

sober thoughts and kind words..thank you.

i'm finding that the 'strip away' tells me much more than piling upon piles. in many ways, i feel like i'm detoxing or reconditioning myself from my old ways, yah?....saying just what needs to be said, instead of rambling...i guess i'm trying to get to the heart of the matter....finally.
