just poring over photographs from our latest trip to portland...

i took this batch of a telephone pole in nob hill. the city's filled with these archival relics. they're caked with layers of staples and torn posters, revealing stories and imagery that mark the passage of time. i don't know whether to photograph them or strip them bare to hoard the graphics for future collages. i spent a good portion of time peeling off expired fliers from SE poles two nights ago, but, i only scratched the surface. i'm afraid portland would be TOO clean if i got my grubby little mits on it, though. there's a certain charm to urban decay, but too much grit can look unkempt, unsafe and downright disturbing. while too little can look disneyland-ish, void of character, antiseptic and just as unsettling. but, portland?...weeeeeell, she just keeps her recipe for success to herself. like all women of mystery..it just keeps 'em wanting more.

I love these photos. I think they would look great in an exhibit hung among your collage work.

that's interesting you say that...i've never considered myself a photog. but, in many ways i think these do compliment my other modes of art making..

i love these photos. they are so much like yr collages. ripped edges and fragmented letters or words. beautiful.

well, thank you..
i know that when i took these i was actually visually composing collages in my head, or making details of a much bigger collage...funny how the mind can just flip a switch like that between mediums. collage can often times look very painterly to me, too..

I took one or two shots of this phenomenon, on Hawthorne Boulevard. Yours are better.

Knob Hill Grit
Wonderful texture photos. Your comments about Portland's Grit vs. Tidy is spot-on. There are many people who would thank you for clearing off these poles! I'm glad you left us some grit.
