mama mia

probably my favorite photograph of mom and me to date, circa 1967 (she looks SO happy)

had a nice chat with mom today. she'd been giving me those cursory guilt ridden phone messages for weeks now, so i finally caved in and rang her up. for those who don't know me that well, i HAAAAAATE phones. with a PASSiON.....always have, and probably always will. it doesn't matter how close i am to a person, i just loathe putting that fucking contraption next to my face.

but, today was different.

for whatever reason, mom and i got on the subject of death. normally, that would be the furthest from our thoughts, as we're both pretty laid back, and we're constantly joking with each other - something i've always cherished about our relationship.

we spoke candidly about funerals and wakes we had attended and how uncomfortable we felt....whether we should touch the deceased while we're saying our good-byes, etc. i'm amazed how much my mom's teaching me at this point in our lives. i've learned much more, i'd say, than in my formative years.

but, even with all this talk of death and dying, we managed to laugh. i told her i'd be the one bawling my eyes out and jumping on her casket as it makes its decent...screaming at the top of my lungs....'NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!'

actually, i think she was half laughing, half crying....but, i'm still glad i said it.

I hate phones, too. I screen ALL my calls and then make up cheap excuses for not returning them.
Cute picture, dahlin'.

By the time my kid was 4 she was trained to just ignore the phone. Someone would come over and the phone would ring and she would be quietly playing with a toy in the corner and I would just carry on a convo while the phone rang till it went to the machine and the person would be APPALLED. HOW can you do that to your daughter. She's going to hate phones when she grows up. At the time I thought yeah, perfect, no teenager on the phone for 4 hours at a time telling the famdamily secrets when I am trying to get her to do something. One day when she was about 8, a school friend phoned her and she answered the phone and after a long pause said uh what do you want? Then there were awkward pauses on her end and she hung up and said mom, my friend phoned me but she didn't have anything to say. AH-hahaha! I laughed I cried and then I had to tell her that I was a mutant freak and by proxy so was she because people phone each other alll the time with nothing to say. Yakyakyak, that's about it. It was hard for her to grasp and at 16 she still rarely talks on the phone for any length of time.

I had this friend that would literally phone me every day and talk AT me for an hour. I took to putting the phone down and going about my business and every once in a while I would pick it up and say uh huh and yes I know because that was all she wanted to hear, she just wanted to talk, she didn't need my input save a cursory mhmm. She ain't my friend anymore for other reasons but that is ONE of many reasons that I am happy that she ain't.

well, sounds like you taught your youngins right. we woulda played together, i'm sure....(with all our non-technical, non-modern like toys!).....phones are nothin' but the devil's way of fucking up rhythm, i'm convinced. i cringe, each and every time i hear that blasted thing chime...

here's to just being quiet with yourself-and only letting in what you please..
