kidney beans anyone?

i love pat, my brother.....

just found out this week he's in need of a kidney. yup. the docs say he'll need dialysis before too long....i'm not biologically linked, but if i were a match (i have the same blood type), i'd donate in a hot second.

he's so drained, so tired. it broke my heart to talk with him last night.....but, we still laughed and laughed and laughed, like we always do....the best medicine of all, yah? when we started talking about cadaver vs. living donors, he joked.....'i'm holding out for some plane crash....one full of olympic korean athletes!!!!'

boo. that sucks.

my boss's wife is a nephrologist here in sacramento. the good news is your brother can live a long time on dialysis. the bad news, well yeah, dialysis sucks. : (

(i was reading just this week that they have a new process which works better than the traditional dialysis - you spend one night a week getting dialysis while you sleep, and it works better than the 4 hours once a week variety)

fingers crossed for finding a donor though.

I have a good friend who had a kidney transplant a few years ago. If you want, I can send his contact info. I'm sure he'd be happy to talk to your brother.

I am pissed at my body. Because I talked to my nephrologist-friend- told me I would not be a candidate for a donor. Mostly because I was so anemic myself-but it was 3 fuckin years ago!!!!!!!!!!!! Just so frustrating! At least I can try and help in other ways, but DAMN

Re: pat
so, pammy, not sure if you'll come back and see this reply....

but, what DOES have to match, as far as being a good candidate? read coffeebean's post below.

all i've heard is what you said, plus you need to be 60 or younger, same blood type(?) and non drinker, smoker/for HOW many months though????

It turns out, its not so easy, I've realized... someone I know needs a kidney but his son and his daughter have been trying for months. They need you to not be overweight at all, not drink for the last I don't remember how many months, not have done any drugs, not smoked, nothing.

Well YOU could because you're in great shape and haven't been drinking... but you might have even had to go a while longer since you probably drank in the last couple of months?

So his daughter quit smoking and drinking but is still a little overweight (not much at ALL) and his son quit drinking, never smoked, but he is also a little too overweight.

And the poor guy is having the worst time with his dialysis and everything.. its like shit, let them give him their kidney already!!!!

jeebus, that's harsh!!!!!

guess that's why my bro is holding out for some living or dead (?) olympiad....i'm not sure what all the criteria are, but if it comes down to me (bottom o'the barrel, seriously!), i'll do my darnedest!

hope your friend pulls through!

I hope he does too. :(
He's such a close family friend that I really feel like he's my uncle.

I get so mad when they are SO picky about his kids' condition. They are young and only 10-20 pounds overweight. Its ridiculous, and he's getting worse.

I hope your brother is okay!!
