art things.

artwork by caio fonseca
pietrasanta painting p96.10
gouache on paper
1996

i've been slooooooowly watching the 'art city' dvds, and forgot just how much i like caio fonseca. this series offers a glimpse into many artist's minds and studios...an archive that should not be missed by any art lover. agnes martin made me cry..her words fill me with such calm. she said all the things i think most artists believe, but don't necessarily know how to verbalize.

although this documentary is 10 years old, and some of the artists are no longer with us, the topics are still fresh - the hunger to make it in the art world, still sexy.

Wow sweetheart, I really like that painting,

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll get out of here at a semi-decent time, so I can meet up with your folks at Pepe's tonight!

Ya likie my gilligan icon? I made him around 5:00 this morning while I was eating my frosted mini wheats.

if the hunger to make it in the art world is sexy
why do I feel so gross?

perhaps because living in the studio is dirty bizness!

kewl! i'm digging the caio fonseca too, and i swear i've seen it before, but i can't remember when or where. sounds like a good dvd zeriez! (i have sleeping (z's) on the mind...) still need to watch the video you sent me for my b-day, but i'm getting closer to having some good down time to really enjoy it. i finished dance number 7 of 11 tonight! yippee!!! and i turned in my grades- the dreadduty i face every semester/zemester. so yeah, that's why i'm up at 4 am, which wouldn't be a big deal if i didn't have to get up at 8 am tomorrow/today. oh well. at least i don't have to get up early to go to a dreadjob! the dance i just finished is giving me a brain ache. i mean, i feel like a hack. but then, i didn't pick the music OR the costumes, so if you ever see it, KEEP THAT IN MIND!

please. don't blame me.

:-)

in other words, it has lots of "trick" steps at the end for the kiddies to do- trained seals... but you know what? anything more my style would have perplexed the young'ens. i mean, the music is step in time from mary poppins... have you ever had to listen to that song over and over and over? i was so ready to finish it so that i wouldn't have to listen to it any more than was absolutely necessary!!! i'm hoping my late night dick van dyke will make my yucky neighbors move out!

step in time mixed with chim chim(i)ney.

blech..

kim kim(i)ney needs to go to bed and read something grown up and philosophical now!

bye!

Papasan Princess Poppins
yeah, it was "Hag 4.6" for sure! Three of my late night choreographed dances were tested out in the studio tonight and i smiled a lot, so that was a good sign. i never know how my 2 am visions and rhythms are going to work on actual people in the studio. i only had to re-do one thing, really. (not bad, eh?!) the kids have a lot of work to do to finish learning them and to pull them off but i think there's enough time for that.

fell asleep in the papasan tonight, now i'm up again and going to bed for real for a few more hrs. (lovin' the papasan!!!)

Re: Papasan Princess Poppins
that papasan sounds positively dreamy. i can't wait to give it a test drive (or sleep!)

and you bring up a good point with dance, once it leaves your head, it's up to interpretation, much like fine art. but, then you ALSO have to contend with the dancers 'not getting it' or worse, challenging your original design and performing it into something completely different than what you intended. which in a way, could be bad or good, depending on your flexibility as an artist. in any case...it takes a brave soul to let your art go like that.

i miss watching you dance!

Re: Papasan Princess Poppins
yeah, i was depressed with my tap and juggle class because the kiddies couldn't do it the way i had intended it to go, but the next week, i saw what they could do and what would work and i was happy enough with it. it is an interesting variable... the dancers! sometimes they bring things to life so much better and fuller than i had ever imagined it, and they add some of their other training (ballet for example) and add so much that all i can do is sit there with a stupid grin on my face the size of montana! other times i leave the studio feeling frustrated ("why can't they just keep their heels up?! they know they need to keep their heels up! i can't be the only one telling them to keep their heels up! grrr!") or depressed ("they'll never get it. i have so much to rework and change. boo hoo hoooo.") and other times, things are no big deal and all is well either way...

guess that keeps it interesting and challenging for me!

yeah, you have to try the papasan sometime. and i would LOVE to have you watch me dance. miss you.

Hi, could you tell me something about the art city dvds? I've been looking for them online, but I've found only one 58 minute dvd. You said there were more than one? I found one "Manhattan" dvd, and one "Manhattan volume 1", but they are both 58 minutes. I don't know if they are the same or not. It sounds like a really interesting dvd.

yeah, i flubbed when i said they were all 'making it in manhattan'
the others are 'ruling with passion' and 'simplicity' under the title 'art city'

i netflixed mine, but probably should've bought the set. they're really really good, i think you'd enjoy them..
